Here you will find a list of terms that are useful to know if you want to get into playing slot machines.

Bonus

A special feature in many slot machines that you can unlock through specific symbol combinations. The bonus round can be anything from extra spins to a side-game, this differs per slot machine. In many video slots with a specific theme the bonus round may be a short platform game, maze game, or a game in which you have to grab or guess the location of items in line with the theme of the machine. In these games you can win extra credits and/or multiply the credits won.

Credit Meter

In casino slot machines the credit meter is a LED screen that displays the credit you have left on the machine. In video slots this might be a simulated LED screen, or displayed in a font and window more in line with the theme of the game.

EGM

Short for Electronic Gaming Machine

Low Level/Slant Top

In casinos, Slant Tops are the machines which come with a stool so the player can sit down to play.

Payline

Paylines are the horizontal, diagonal, or zig-zagged lines along which winning combinations are marked. Classic slots may have one to nine of these, while the amount of paylines on video slots can run up to one hundred.

Rollup

The sensational sounds or music that is played when you win while the meter counts up your winnings.

Stand Up/Upright

In casinos, Uprights are the slot machines which are played standing.

Taste

Over the course of several spins you winn often receive at least the minimum bet back. This is amount of money won is referred to as the “taste”, because it serves as an inducement to keep players playing.

Tilt

The tilt switch in electromechanical slot machines will break the circuit and set of an alarm if the machine is tampered with. Tampering includes tilting the machine. The more modern machines no longer have the classic tilt switch, but TILT has come to stand for any kind of technical fault.

Top Game

Some video slots will feature a basic game at the bottom of the screen and another set of reels at the top. The bottom game is the main game. Often once you build up a certain amount of credit in the bank by playing the main game, you can manually select to play the top set of reels, the top game, with that credit.
